Water as Life

How safe and healthy is our water?

I was in the airport on Friday coming back from study in Pennsylvania and caught a story on CNN that was all over television and the newspapers. Traces of every kind of pharmaceuticals have been found in our public water supplies. This includes antibiotics, barbiturates, anti-depressants, illegal drugs and all others. What goes in must come out, not to mention all the old pills that get flushed!

In addition to this new information about traces of drugs coming out of our tap, it has been long known that pesticides, petrochemicals and toxins infuse our groundwater. Nearly a billion pounds of pesticides end up in 100% of surface water and 33% of underground water every year! More than 700 synthetic organic compounds can be identified in our drinking water AFTER treatment, including those banned decades ago, like DDT. The water affects everything in our food chain. These chemicals are clearly linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility, early puberty, hormonal problems, neurological disorders, liver damage and autoimmune disorders, which are epidemic these days.
Two chemicals previously thought safe are put into our drinking water - Chlorine and fluoride. Mounting evidence is clear that they are both dangerous to out health, especially with prolonged exposure.

Many health organizations and the scientific community are questioning finally whether fluoride is actually safe or not, there was just an article in Scientific America. Fluoride is a toxic byproduct of chemical production - I have heard both of pesticides and nuclear missiles. As little as 1 part per million causes brain lesions similar to Alzheimer's and Dementia. It also weakens bones, impairs the immune system and thyroid health.
Chlorine is one of the most hazardous substances known. It is the cheapest effective disinfectant which works by killing all living organisms. It has a very negative impact on our bodies, and is dangerous to use as a household cleaner and through swimming pool exposure.

Chlorine interacts with foods and other substances, forming a carcinogenic chemical. The EPA has found the toxic byproduct of chlorine called dioxin to be 300,000 times more potent as a carcinogen than DDT. It damages cells especially in our lungs and blood, fatty acids and vitamin E in the body and our beneficial intestinal flora. Chlorine contributes to cancer, immune problems, asthma, thyroid issues, damage to mucous membranes and skin. Chlorine scars the inside of artery walls, causing cholesterol problems, high blood pressure and clogged arteries.

It is even more dangerous to breathe chlorine fumes. In taking a shower, you are exposed to more of the toxins than drinking a gallon of chlorinated water as it is absorbed through the skin and lungs.

What to do?

Most bottled water is no better or even worse. There are better methods of water treatment, such as ozonation, and many alternatives are already used throughout the world.

I highly recommend Aqasana filters. They are easy to order online, are rated really high and reasonably priced.

Here is a link: http://www.aquasanaaffiliates .com

And they have a nice sink / shower filter package. Use promotion number 3556, and you will get 20% off and free shipping!

The only bottled water I can recommend are Figi, and the relatively new Eternity from New Zealand. I recommend them because along with Trinity water (which I can't find) they are the only bottled water with a high, or alkaline pH. (See the next article) Most people are very acid, and these waters will help change that. But, it's essential that you protect yourself from damaging chemicals for drinking, cooking and bathing! Remember...Water is for Life!
