Abyangha ~ The Art of Self-Massage

Nourish and strengthen the body, achieve soft, clear and radiant skin, and decrease the effects of aging with self oil-massage.

For thousands of years, people have used the technique of massaging their body with oil to nourish and strengthen the body, impart tone and firmness to the tissues, stimulate circulation and improve organ health. This simple self-massage is a pleasant and essential component of an Ayurvedic daily routine.

In just 15 minutes a day, you can achieve a radiant appearance, center your mind, fortify your immune system and protect the barriers of the skin and energy field. Abyangha harmonizes the doshas Vata, Kapha and Pitta.

Here at Ayurvedic Balance, we custom formulate a unique abyangha oil for you. We use the finest pure, organic essential oils blended with the carrier oil most beneficial for your body type, to address your wellness concerns at this time.

Start with a dry brush technique to remove dead skin and stimulate circulation Using a dry sauna brush or loofah for a few minutes, work long strokes from extremities in towards the heart. A stimulating dry brush is especially beneficial for Kapha types. Vata types should be more gentle.

Many people find the most convenient time for their abyangha massage is right after their bath or shower. You may want to warm your small bottle of oil formula in a cup of hot water while you bathe. Make sure you stay warm and protected from drafts during your massage.

Lovingly and mindfully massage oil onto your entire body for about 15 minutes. It is a time to focus on yourself and luxuriate in the beautiful scent, allowing the massage to nourish your soul. This is an excellent opportunity to tap into your positive affirmations to release negative patterning.

Start at your foot, using circular motions at joints and long sweeping strokes on limbs. Use enough oil so that your skin absorbs most of it, but a little remains on the surface. Take time to get all the nooks, between toes and behind your knees. Movements should be fluid and rhythmic but firm enough to stimulate the muscles.

Work up leg to your hips, buttocks, and massage in a clockwise direction over abdomen, up chest, over and around breasts, collarbone, down arm and hand. Be patient and take time to enjoy. Go back up to neck and face using delicate circles on the face, being gentle around your eye tissue. You may want to switch to a special oil for your face, such as Earth Essentials Wrinkle Free. Apply oil to the crown of the head with circular, stimulating strokes. Then repeat down the other side of the body. Oil should now be pretty well absorbed into the skin, any excess can be removed with a towel. By completion of massage you will feel both relaxed and invigorated, and have a wonderful scent as well!

Kapha Abyangha Oil: Using sunflower oil with essential oils to stimulate, uplift, motivate and cheer.

Vata Abyangha Oil: Using sesame oil with essential oils to warm, calm, nourish, moisten and strengthen.

Pitta Abyangha Oil: Using sunflower or coconut oil to cool, soothe, bring peace and balance.
